  • First Bend of the Yangtze River

first bend of Yangtze River s
Shigu is a town of the Lijiang Naxi Autonomous County which is situated 70 kilometers from the seat of lijiang County . It is where the Yangtze River , following a northwest course , plunges head-on into a high and cragged cliff , takes a sharp U-turn-believed to be the river first bend as it flows on and changes its course in a northeast direction .

  • Lugu lake

    lugu Lake
The lugu lake , with an average depth of 40 meters , is set in a dense forest between the Jinglang yi Autonomous County of Yunnan Province and Yanyuan County of Sichuan Province and 300 kilometers from Dayan Town of Lijiang . Is fresh , the water pollution-free
, and the scenery incredibly delightful . The shore of the lake is home to the Musuo people , a branch of the ethnic Naxi group who retain the vestiges of a matriarchal society . The wedding custom of the Musuo people is noted fro its exotic ceremonies .
Lijiang lugu Lake Mystery and charm surround the lake, partly because it was once an unspoiled place and still retains much of its totally natural beauty, but mostly because the Mosuo people who live there form a matriarchal society. There is no marriage. Men stay in the women's home as mates called 'Axia' and the intimate relationship lasts as long as they like. Children are brought up by women, and use the surname of their mothers. Families are composed of the
members of the matrilineal kin. Women operate production and management, and hold the principal position in the society, forming a modern day 'woman's kingdom', which adds mystique to this place.

The lake is encircled with hills. The water is clean and inviting, with fish swimming in it. The forest around is dense and the air is fresh. This is a place that is little tainted by modern industry - the natural beauty is retained. The weather is pleasant - it is cool in summer and warm in winter. All the seasons are as comfortable as spring, but the best seasons to come here are spring and summer when the hills are emerald green, the flowers are in bloom and the birds are singing happily.

  • Tiger Leaping Gorge
After the renowned Three Gorges in Sichuan and Hubei , Tiger Leaping Gorge is the Yangzi best gorge, Wedged tightly between titanic cliffs, the river is so narrow here, so legend tells us, that a hunted tiger made his excape to the other side in a single bound, Yunnan main northern road to Tibet crosses the Yangzi near the gorge at Lunan , 90 kilometers from lijiang. From Qiaotou it is possible to see how such a geological phenomenon was created : two huge mountains leaning close to each other and a large volume of fast moving water between them cutting deeper and deeper into the butom of the gorge. In some places there is a drop of 3000 meters to the water, a beautiful and vertiginous places to go for a walk.
About 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Lijiang Old Town lying between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan) and Haba Snow Mountain (Haba Xueshan) is Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Gorge), which is believed to be the deepest gorge in the world. From the top of the gorge you look down the steeply angled (70-90 degrees) mountain sides to the rushing Golden Sands (Jingsha) River with its 18 frothing rapids more than 200 meters (about 700 feet) below.

Naturally divided into three sections, the first section, which is the narrowest and uppermost section, is the mouth of the fast flowing Jingsha River. In the midst of the river's mouth is a large rock that is positioned at the gorge's narrowest section-only 30 meters (33 yards) wide.

    Entrance to Tiger Leaping Gorge
An ancient legend says that a tiger used this rock as its stepping stone so it could leap across from one side of the gorge to the other, which is how the place got its name.

As the river enters the middle section, it drops another 100 meters (330 feet) and its flow rate increases to an amazing speed. Here the thunderous rushing waters slam into sharp, large rocks and crash down into the river forming swirling whirlpools. Can it get more exciting? Yes, it can as the third and lowest section is acclaimed for being the wildest attraction of all!

The cliffs over-looking this section are even steeper and much more dangerous. Here, the river twists and turns and the river vigorously surges forward creating high waves and a frothy spew as it collides with the mountainsides. This is a view that inspires a sense of adventure and satisfies the deepest yearnings for magnificent scenery.

The gorge stretches about 15 kilometers (nine miles) and also affords people the possibility of rafting and drifting peacefully in its large quiet sections, for the gentler folks among us and an exciting rafting adventure for the more experienced. Do not want to raft?

Useful Tips: This is a great sightseeing stop with enormous photo opportunities. Bring your camera, wear skidproof shoes, and be prepared to be astonished.

The best time to come is May and the start of June, when the hills are afire with plant and flower life.

Plan on three to four days away from Ljing doing the hike though it can be done in two. Many travellers have lingered up to a week.

The first thing to do is to check with cafs in Ljing for the latest gossip on the mini-trek, particularly the weather and its possibly lethal effects on the trail. Most cafs give away hand-drawn maps of the trek. They show paths, walking times and some places to stay, but remember that they arent to scale.

Transport is easier than it once was. Finishing south in Qiotu allows for quicker transport back to Ljing, but heading north towards Dj gives you the option of continuing on to Bishuti. Most people take a Shangri-laCbound bus early in the morning, hop off in Qiotu, and hike quickly to stay overnight in Walnut Garden.

Development is taking its toll on the gorge. After three years of Herculean blasting and building, a road now leads all the way through the gorge from Qiotu to Walnut Garden and a dirt track swings north to Bishuti, joining the road to Shangri-la. Tour buses shuttle up and down the gorge and kitschy stop-off points are being constructed. This currently isnt too much of an annoyance for trekkers as the high path climbs way above all the activity.

This does mean that you can still see the gorge (if you dont want to trek) by taking a bus to Qiotu and then catching one of the ubiquitous microbuses that shuttle people to the main viewpoint 10km away.
